The Public Theater is an arts organization theater which was founded in 1954 as the Shakespeare Workshop by Joseph Papp. When Papp died in 1991 it was renamed in his memory to "Joseph Papp Public Theater". The theater is situated at 425 Lafayette Street in New York City.
The theater is host to many up-and-coming shows; its first was Hair, which gained traction an earned a world-premiere production. The Off-Broadway production of Hamilton played at The Public until August 2015, when it earned its Broadway debut.
